When we decided to replace our driveway and walkway I first reached out to family and friends who could recommend a company as opposed to hiring "blind." I always get 3 bids on any project we hire out but this time I got 6.

Since I have run my own "nano" (as compared to "micro") custom sewing business for 24 years, when I hire a contractor I look for the same quality of business arrangements and craftsmanship that I offer my own customers. I found both in Cole Concrete, Inc.

I needed a new driveway in regular concrete, a new back patio in stamped concrete, and new porch also in stamped concrete. When owner Bob Cole came to do an estimate, he readily answered all my picky questions about how he does his work. He gave me enoughinformation so that I could figure out how his business differed from several others from which I received estimates. After all, price is one piece of information, but what you get for that price is even more important.

For example, he told me what kind of concrete he uses, the depth of the gravel and the concrete, and the type of coloring system he uses for the stamped concrete. He told me that he would use rebar inserted into holes drilled in my house foundation to anchor the porch slabs. I needed new porch posts and Bob was willing to add that work so I wouldn't have to hire a handyman in addition.

I like to see a very detailed contract, and that's what I received from Bob. All the details were there, including ample and specific details about materials, the exact scope of all the work from removal of debris to the final sealing of the stamped concrete, and a prompt work schedule with start and finish parameters. The payment schedule was lenient, with four payments along the way. The contract included standardized Terms and Conditions, which is a must for businesses and a comfort to consumers.

I was very pleased by how promptly the work began and finished. I wrote out and mailed a deposit check on a Wednesday and the crew was at my house the next Tuesday morning before the check even cleared. The bulk of the work was completed by Friday evening, except for the posts and sealing which were done on the following Friday, as promised. Everything was done predictably and on schedule.

The workmanship was meticulous. I watched the crew float the entire plain concrete driveway until it was as smooth as glass; then they broom finished it. The stamped concrete was formed with two sets of forms, for shape and texture, and then they hand tooled every "grout" line between the "stones" both on my front porch and the back patio.

I was also impressed with the cleanup every day. These guys are house trained. After each day's work, they neatly stowed all their tools and materials, made sure that I could safely get in and out of my house despite all the gravel, wire mesh, and missing porch concrete, and they even cleaned the street in front of my house so my neighbors would not have to drive through clumps of dirt. The final cleanup was also meticulous. They cleaned stray daubs of concrete off my siding on their hands and knees. They seeded the torn up yard and covered the areas with straw and even hosed down my new driveway, sidewalk, and the street. Bob put up my house numbers on the new posts so I wouldn't have to get up on a ladder.

My home looks far better now than it did 28 years ago when we bought it.
